People still talk about the house across the street from where Carol Edwards now stands at 42nd Street and Montgall Avenue.
The owner grew flowers, had a nice fence. Then a fire ripped through the top floor. The damage was extensive, but the house was salvageable. Still, the owner tore it down. She had watched the neighborhood deteriorate. She no longer wanted to stay, but refused to leave her property for some crack dealer to desecrate.
It was such a nice house, people say, pointing to the empty lot, green in spots on ground made lumpy by the buried remains of the foundation. Read more
