* Where: In and around Frankfort, Bardstown and Lexington, Ky. * How to get there: To reach Heaven Hill Distilleries in Bardstown, the traditional home to the Kentucky bourbon industry and a good jumping-off point for the trail, take I-65 South into Kentucky, then exit 112 toward Bardstown/Clermont, merging onto Ky. 245. Turn right at North Third Street/ U.S. 150. At the next roundabout, take the second exit onto South Third Street. Turn left onto Gilkey Run Road and go to No. 1311. * How far: About 155 miles or 2 hours, 40 minutes. * Why: The Kentucky Bourbon Trail connects seven distilleries in the state that together produce most of the bourbon in the world. You can often sample it. Bourbon production is governed by law in the United States. At least 51 percent of the grain used must be corn, and a new oak barrel must be introduced for each new batch of whiskey. All the distilleries on the trail offer factory tours, most of which are free. Most places also offer half-ounce samples of the goods. Some serve Bourbon Balls made with powdered sugar, butter and often pecans, then flavored with bourbon and usually dipped in chocolate. And getting there is half the fun. Rolling hills, deep hollers and acres of hardwood trees -- plus the occasional white fencing of a Bluegrass State horse breeder -- make for lush driving with just enough stops along the way to keep you refreshed. Tours are offered most days of the week, but hours vary, so call ahead. For more information, go to www.kentuckybourbontrail.com or contact one of the stops on the trail: * Address: 1311 Gilkey Run Road, Bardstown, Ky. * Contact: (502) 337-1000 or www.bourbonheritage center.com.
