High-Speed Chase in Catawba County: 3 charged in shooting death
Three Hickory men face murder charges after a shooting early Sunday that left a teenager dead in a Claremont parking lot.
Police responded about 3 a.m. to a report of shots fired at White Oak Manor condominiums and found 17-year-old Deangelo Davis shot to death, Officer Jeff Barkley said.
He would not say how many times the teen had been shot or whether he was armed. He also could not confirm the four men had been at a party at the complex. WCNC-TV, the Observer's news partner, reported the men were arguing over a girl. Read more

“It will be great for students to have this mentoring program available to them”
Kindergarten screenings and registration for next fall will soon be held at Catawba County Schools, Hickory City Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools.
Any child who will be 5 on or before Oct. 16 may enroll in kindergarten for the coming school year. Parents should determine the school their child will attend by visiting or calling the elementary school close to their home.
To enroll, parents must bring:
** Child's Social Security card.
** Child's certified birth certificate with seal (photocopies and hospital certificates are not acceptable). Read more
