I'm really sorry to say this, but we need to temperarely cut all sports, arts and music at the jc college level until we all get through this recession. Try to keep it at the high school level because it introduces them to creative thinking and working as a team. But at the college level these subjects won't help on a job application.

I tell people this and they think I am some nutcase. In times like this I think you should only keep state required k-12 classes often called A-G classes (English, Math, History, and Science). In community colleges just have basic classes as well. Get rid of all the required EL (teaching kids who only know Spanish, English) crap and the state would save a ton of money.

It is bad but the state doesn’t care. I have only one class because I can’t get financial aid and that one class 45 students were registered 7 got dropped the first day of school and 36 more students wanted to add the class. Parking sucks.

Why does everyone need to go to college when there are plenty of good paying trades out there. Our young people need to begin moving into these jobs. There is a misconception out there that you absolutely must have a college degree to achieve in life. It's not true.

Eliminating college athletics won't help. State money isn't used to support it. College Athletics are funded entirely by student fees paid by students at the start of the semester and by charging admission to games.

It also depends on what type of job you want. If you just want to flip burgers then you should skip college but it you want to make a large sum of money in a job you really enjoy then some college is a must.

The majority of high end employers will not employ anyone who does not have a legit Batchelor's.

We still have a lot of areas of public spending that should be cut that have not been cut. We have two state agencies doing the exact same thing. We pay both those agencies the same amount meaning we are paying twice for the same exact service.

We also have illegal immigrants still collecting welfare from our tax dollars.

Instead of cutting education we ought to cut redundancy. We ought to cut the welfare for illegals program.

The cutbacks are really getting ridiculous. Mt. SAC before the cutbacks and spikes in enrollment was just insane two years ago. The parking was horrible then, so I can imagine now.

But still, some college students just don't get it. You want parking? Get up earlier then usual, get to school, get your parking spot and just study until class. Too many college students are lazy. They wake up late or take later classes and expect to get good parking spots. Its just not going to happen. I have classes at 7:30 Monday-Thursday and get to school by 7. I have had no problems.

An ironic situation. In theory, there should be lots of jobs for college instructors due to increased demand, but in a government run system it does not work this way.

The current problems of the community colleges and education in general have more to do with the recession and the melt down of the real estate market than what is mentioned above. When the taxpayers have less money, so do state institutions who rely on them for support. There is not much more to it than that.

The long range problems of education are rooted more in the failure in the middle and junior high schools. This is where American education falls apart. I always ask those who talk about education reform: have you ever taught 7th grade English? How about 8th grade math? If you haven't and you talk about reforming the schools, then you don't know what you are talking about. Too many middle school students read and do math at the third grade level, which means that they are not functionally disabled but are simply unwilling to learn. They don't want to be there, yet the teachers have to put up with them. So, I would suggest that at age 14 if a student is disrupting the class and not doing the work that he be given the choice of changing his ways or leaving. Let the students who want to learn gain the benefits the teachers have to offer by not being distracted by this on going mess we have in the schools created by 10 per cent of the "students."

Also, I would ask, what happened to the high school shop classes? Actually, I know what happened to the shop classes. They were done in by prissy fingered educrats who want all of their students to go to college, become political activists, and to come out and compete for government cubicle jobs. Supported by whom? This is both educational and economic stupidity.

There is no reason why young people can't learn to read Chaucer, learn to hang a door, learn to program in C++, and learn to change the oil in their car. We need more than diverse people, we need people with diverse learning skills who can adapt to changing circumstances. and still support themselves and

Daily Horoscope for January 2

Virgo

It's okay to have high expectations, but try to keep in mind that no one can be all things to all people. As the Moon spends one last day in its current sign, it urges you to find a way to recognize others for their strengths, and forgive them their weaknesses. Virgoans' idiosyncrasies must look like strange quirks from the outside as well! Fate ties up the loose ends towards the end of the day.
