JOHNSTON -- Funeral services for Mr. Marvin Kermit Carlson will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvery Lutheran Church with Rev. J. Chris Fischer officiating assisted by Rev. L.E. Cumbee. Burial will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Saluda County. The family will receive friends at Bland Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening. Memorials may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Building Fund, 1186 Mt. Calvary Road, Johnston, SC 29832.
Mr. Carlson, born August 7, 1922, died March 28, 2008. He was a native of Bird Island, Minnesota and was the son of the late Victor and Esther Carlson. He attended school in Hector, MN. After graduation, he apprenticed as a watchmaker to a jeweler in Bird Island. At the onset of WW II he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he served as 1st lieutenant. He graduated and received his wings as a bombardier-navigator at Midland Army Air Base. Continuing his training, he was transferred to Columbia Army Air Base where he joined a B-25 air crew. While in Columbia, he met and married Mary Lou Werts from Chappells, SC. After completing training, he was sent to Corsica and Italy where he became a part of the 340 Bomb Group and 487 Bomb Squadron. He was awarded the Air Medal with clusters and the Unit Citation with clusters. At war's end, his family settled in Johnston, SC, where he resumed his craft of watchmaker. He joined the instrument department at Savannah River Plant and retired from the project department in 1980. After retirement he, his wife Mary Lou, and his dog, Sam, stayed in Johnston where they continued to raise cattle and timber. Read more
