When County Executive Steve Levy first raised the idea of doing away with the entire county police highway patrol, Sheriff Vincent DeMarco says he told Levy he "didn't think it was a good idea." Portraying ...

I just wanted to thank the deputies that help me the other day and drove me home after I had a car accident. God Bless You!

They did not ask to patrol the highways, nor did they want to. Yet, they are managing to perform this difficult new function in addition to completing their current job requirements. Why? because they were told to... I am sure the only thing making it somewhat tolerable is the outright arrogance of the Suffolk police..

The slice of the political pie dealing with law enforcement was cut and handed out in the late 1950's early 60's. Western townships were combined to create the Suffolk County district police. The eastern townships who lost almost all of their political clout with the creation of a county legislature managed to keep their township power by keeping their LOCAL police departments. The Sheriff was told to just do your civil work and manage the jail. Because of the fact, some Sheriff's didn't want any additional duties and were content to just maintain a "good ole boys" department, the department ended up being the cast off of local law enforcement. Any job that would stress their budgets was dumped onto the Sheriff's department. Move the clock ahead twenty years and recent Sheriff's have brought up the law enforcement standards of the department par with any agency in Suffolk County. There is certainly enough crime to go around for everyone. The Sheriff is just stepping back into a role he has sworn to uphold since 1683. And how did one local paper end its editorals....and Why Not???????

I just wonder where all the cops no longer doing highway patrol went? I sure don't see any increased police presence on the local roads. Guess Dunkin' Donuts must be having a crime wave they're investigating!

And how come the Sheriffs are able to do enforcement without causing the ridiculous traffic jams the police do? Traffic on the sections of the LIE I travel has improved markedly since the deputies took over. Perhaps it's because (dare I say it?) The arrogant SCPD doesn't really give a rat's patootie about how their actions affect the general traveling public (who happen to pay their exorbitant salaries).
Disband SCPD and give the equipment to the sheriffs. |
