'It appears, from a glance, that there are more candidates,' Brunswick County Board of Elections Director Greg Bellamy said of the local races.

Town clerk -- and so much more

Town Clerk Marie Garris was important even in the humble beginnings of the town of Stallings.
In the mid-1970s, she helped raise $3,000 for the costs to incorporate. That was accomplished in 1975.
Then she volunteered to take minutes at town meetings, which she did for a year without pay before the town collected its first tax revenues, according to former Mayor Heath Guion. For the first 14 years, she was the town's only employee.
Today Stallings has a new Town Hall, its own police department and more than 30 workers. And 32 years after she was named town clerk, Garris is retiring. Read more
