Roadshow: Traffic fines shock some drivers

Full story: Inside Bay Area

Q: Does every jurisdiction set its own fees for traffic citations? If so, is there any limit set by the California Vehicle Code? Recently I was fined $381 in San Leandro for not coming to a full stop before turning right on a red light.

I just did a search for red light violations in San Leandro after having received a $446 red light violation fine for not making a complete stop while making a right turn on a red light. To add insult to injury it was captured by a camera mounted on the corner. I have never received a traffic violation and feel this amount is grossly inflated. I feel the fines are completely subjective especially now after reading that you were charged $381 for the exact same violation. I would have been upset to receive a $381 fine as well but felt a small bit of comfort with the thought that my fine MUST be a minimum. I have since left a voice message with the office that issue this violation in San Leandro as directed if I had any questions but have yet to receive a returned call.

Well just who in the hell do you expect to pay for bloated government departments, grossly overpaid and highly benefited civil service employees and most importantly welfare payments, Section 8 housing subsidies, food stamps, free medical care for welfare recepients and illegal aliens, etc. etc. etc.? Next time come to a complete stop at those red lights. Those cameras got you by the balls! Hope this helps!

It's funny how every letter writer admitted to being at fault, but still griped about the fine. Obey the law and you don't have to worry about what the fine is, or isn't... :)

It would appear the point I was trying to make was completely overlooked. Yes, I admit to not having made a complete stop. However, my gripe is that the fines appear to be SUBJECTIVE rather than objective. An admission of guilt does not mean that it's okay for someone to receive a fine that is higher than others who have committed the same infraction. Just because someone makes a mistake and gets fined under the law does not mean we aren't law abiding citizens. While I do care where the money is going that is not what my comments were about. In the end I'm getting that since I broke the law I have no rights and am subject to whatever fine someone feels like issuing on that date. Maybe it's always been this way and since this is my first infraction ever I am just getting a taste of what others who do not "Obey the law" have been subjected to under the law.
