Castro Valley winery fined $115,000 for using volunteers

A small-time vintner's use of volunteer workers has put him out of business after the state squeezed him like a late-summer grape for $115,000 in fines -- and sent a chill through the wine industry. The volunteers, some of them learning to make wine while helping out, were illegally unpaid laborers, and Westover Winery should have been paying them and paying worker taxes, the state Department of Industrial Relations said.

Lanes of I-880 reopen in both directions after major injury crash

All lanes on I-880 have reopened after a major injury crash early Monday morning involving a big-rig blocked both directions of I-880 in San Leandro near Marina Boulevard for over three hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash involving a big rig traveling southbound that went airborne and crossed over the freeway barrier into the northbound lanes was reported just after 3 a.m. 12 vehicles were involved in the massive accident.

CA: Program That Compensates Victims of Crimes Launches New Awareness Campaign

Sept. 10--OAKLAND -- Graphic images of crime victims are on buses and trains traveling in the four most violent cities in the state -- Oakland, Richmond, Antioch and San Francisco -- to alert people about a state victim financial compensation program. The California Victim Compensation Program's awareness campaign will run through the end of September in hopes of closing a gap between the high number of reported violent crimes in the four cities and the low number of compensation applications submitted for assistance.

The fire was contained to half an acre and broke out around 3:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Lake Chabot Road, according to an Alameda County Fire Department spokesperson.
