US sold us out over shield, cries Poland new

Poland's media bluntly summed up the feelings of the country's political right towards President Obama's axing of plans for an east European missile shield today: "Betrayed! The USA has sold us to the Russians and stabbed us in the back," was the headline in one popular newspaper.

President Obama's remarks were seen to be especially insensitive due to the fact that this was the 70th anniversary of the Red Army's invasion of Poland after Hitler and Stalin had reached a compromise "carving up the country between themselves." The Czech Republic also felt slighted by the president saying, "Obama gave into the Kremlin." However, the situation in Poland is growing into a hot political debate here in the states, with conservatives saying the president deliberately abandoned the weapons system project in order to strengthen ties with Russia. The Kremlin was the biggest opponent of the weapons system even though the US has said repeatedly that this was to ward off an attack by Iran.
