Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin is asking for a federal disaster declaration to help communities in Chittenden, Lamoille and Essex counties recover from damage caused by flash flooding and high winds last month.

State Police Lt. James Whitcomb tells The Burlington Free Press that a witness says the accident happened Sunday evening when a car went off a road and struck some trees.

The thick mud swallowing Cambridge, Vt. farmer Mark Boyden's boots as he walked across his land Tuesday may also suck $10,000 to $20,000 from his wallet, he estimated, possibly more.
