O'Malley Endorses Waiving Wetlands Fee

Gov. Martin O'Malley says he supports waiving permitting fees needed to complete construction of a broadband Internet backbone on the Eastern Shore.

Work stopped last fall at the Choptank River in Cambridge when the Maryland Department of the Environment notified the Maryland Broadband Cooperative it would need annual wetlands permits to extend its fiber optic cable across the river -- even though the cable would be laid along the U.S. Route 50 bridge.

O'Malley is the third of the three members of the Maryland Board of Public Works to support waiving the fees. Read more

In visa dispute, businesses face summer worker gap

“The discussion over extending H2B visas is inherently linked to our nation's greater immigration debate, and it must be resolved within that context”

With Congress at an impasse over visas for seasonal laborers, the owners of Eastern Shore businesses that have counted on foreign workers to pick crabs, wash dishes and can corn are bracing for a difficult summer ahead - with consequences that they warn will spread throughout the state economy.

The J.M. Clayton Seafood Co. in Cambridge, the oldest crab-picking house on the Eastern Shore, has pushed opening day back a month. Phillips Crab House in Ocean City , which ordinarily opens Palm Sunday to take advantage of the Easter Week crowds, remains shuttered until April. Read more

Mining proposal causes alarm

“I just think it's a terrible waste of our land”

A Delaware company wants to mine sand and gravel on a parcel of farmland and forest along Marshyhope Creek on Maryland's Eastern Shore - a proposal that is raising alarm among conservationists who fear the operation will destroy rare wetlands, harm endangered species and ruin bird habitat.

The Horsey Family LLC is asking Dorchester County this week for a zoning exception so it can excavate soil, sand and gravel from the property and create an 'open-water lake.'

Workers would then float a hydraulic dredge into the lake and extract the remaining mineral resources, according to an application filed with the county last month. Read more
