Almost everyone in Edmonson County has seen the red white and blue building located just up the street from the Brownsville City Hall. It is currently under renovation and will house the service office and meeting room for the Wand B Doyle Disabled American Veterans Chapter #32 .
Labor and materials are currently being donated to rebuild the building by numerous businesses and construction companies in Edmonson County.
The Chapter is named after Wand B Doyle USN, who was killed in action on the Arizona at Pearl Harbor.
The Chapter is comprised solely of veterans of US military services who have been disabled as a result of wounds suffered in the service of our country.
Over 2.4 million dollars in benefits for Edmonson County disabled veterans have been obtained as a result of the applications collected and submitted by the officers of this one small chapter.
Despite their own disabilities these men have worked tirelessly to obtain benefits due our veterans and their families. Any US Military Veteran who was disabled in combat is eligible to join and to obtain benefits from the government to compensate them for their disability.
Wiley Willis and William (Bill) Meredith are respectively Commander and Senior Vice Commander of the Edmonson County DAV Post. Wiley is a WWII army veteran who served in all five major battles in the European theater of combat . He holds the Bronze Star for Valor and a Purple Heart with Clusters signifying his being wounded in action twice .His older brother was wounded at St Lo in Southern France and his younger brother was killed in action
William Meredith is a US Army veteran of the Viet Nam war and was wounded in action by shrapnel from an enemy mortar attack. He received a Purple Heart ,Combat Medal and the Viet Nam Service Medal. Bill currently suffers from illnesses related to his exposure to Agent Orange.
Edmonson County has more veterans per capita than any other county in our state. Our way of life and the freedoms we currently enjoy have been bought with their blood. These humble men ask no honor for their selves but defer all honor to their buddies who never returned to .enjoy the fruits of liberty. Many of them were just boys who answered the call of their country and now lie in our church yards and in graves on foreign soil, having laid down their lives for our freedom and for the oppressed in other lands.
The veterans who returned with battle wounds that either disabled them at the time of their discharge or have disabled them since, are entitled to compensation by the government.
The DAV will aid and assist any qualified veteran in filing a claim for compensation
If you or your spouse have a service related disability , you can contact Wiley Willis or Bill Merdith at the DAV on any Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 at the DAV Office
