“When I signed all the papers and they gave me the key and I went to the house and opened the door, it was unreal”

At a time when they can't close a budget gap they are giving land away in suffolk county - stupid. Median price of 330,000 - maybe a few years ago, prices are way down in north bellport - more like 150,000 - check mls yourself. Something stinks here, somebody is making money on this and it isn't the taxpayer.

Well I am sure that the homes and lots that they are talking about are worth a lot less than that. The true value of those lots and homes can not be worth more than 40 or tops 50 grand. We all know that someone is getting paid, that is the way of the world. N Bellport though needs those homes and the jobs and revenue that they will bring into that community. Trust me this is a good thing.

What we are talking about here are not these beautiful $300.000 home that you see in the magazines. These are all delapadated run down homes that have been neglected for years. The truth be known is they would be eye sores in any other nieghborhood. Most were no doubt abandoned by the owners who could not suck anymore rent out of the community. N Bellport was a great place back when and it still can be, a little hope and some economical boost will put it right back on its feet. Go sister Go.

To Gay Ramone: No, they CANNOT sell the homes for 500k and keep the difference in profits. These affordable housing programs SPECIFICALLY have a lot of rules that prevent people from "flipping" the houses for a profit (such as the fact that the qualifying homeowner MUST live in the house for a minimum of 10 years, cannot rent it out to someone else, and must provide a lot of detailed financial history info before they can even qualify). Unless major changes are made to the affordable housing programs themselves, these houses will always be designated for the cause, and their prices are more or less fixed.

I am happy to hear about these 75 properties. Steve Levy could surely have auctioned them off for a county profit, but he has been a longtime proponent of the affordable housing / next generation housing movement, and this shows his commitment to Long Island's generation of workers: the mid-20 and early 30-somethings who, by the way, are ALSO about to foot the GIGANTIC federal tax bill for the public cost of social security benefits for the baby boom generation, which is going to be retiring soon...

How long do these people have to stay in the homes?

Can they flip them 2 years down the road and leave tax payers looking like fools?

I'd like a Porsche, can the gov giv me one for half off?

These people must stay in the homes for usually 8-10 years, and if they leave early, must pay back the county.

I wish they'd do this sort of project in Mastic/Mastic Beach/SHirley.

The properties being revamped are the houses that are eye sores, run down, not lived in, have overrun grass and dirty lots - usually where drug dealers and prostitutes and gang bangers hang out.

They ae wresting these properties away from absentee, neglectful landlords and bettering the community and providing help to first time, younger home buyers.

Keep young people on Long Island!!

Let me help some of you grasp what is happening here:

1. these are "lots" Land parcels worht about 100K each.

2. the houses will cost about 125k to build at most - remember they are tax-exempt - they don't pay sales tax on the materials.

3. free lots + houses for $125K =$125k sales price. If these house sell for any more than this they had better be able to show why they are or it is a get rich scam by these "non-profits".

To all: remember that number -$125K Se you back here in a couple of years after they screw us!

BTW - we live in a democratic republic - not a communist state - we "redistribute wealth here through hard work and ingenuity - not government handout's or ripoffs! Grow up, communism is dead.

No I think maybe you are blaming the wrong folks here. Non profits are the ones who will purchase the properties. It is the low life tax delinquents that you should be angry with.

Stop trying to look for something that is not there. People did not pay there taxes they lost the property now it is being sold as discount property to people who will use it for some good, closed case end of story.

They just don't want us to have nothing, do they?

Can we live? Can we get just alittle piece of the "American Dream"? They don't even want us to have the old broken down houses that landlords and owners left to decay years ago. Those people who abandoned there properties didn't pay the taxes so they lost them. Not like they cared at all.

But, yes, this is definately another positive development for North Bellport. It's about time. I agree there are some things the people that ive there can control, but stuff like this, abandoned houses, burnt out houses, no those things are beyond the control of the people. It's up to the county to come in a do something about it. Like they are.

That's the truth, they wouldn't give me a break on my property taxes when I was late & on disability, instead they put my name in the legal section of the news paper, charged me a penalty & I had to pay for he ad. Mean while the Grucci relatives have lots of property that they pay very little taxes on.

The homes were taken from poor people too and if anything they should be sold @ auction. Tax payers shouldn't have to pay for this give away to make politicians look good. Nobody gave me a house. If they are as bad as you say they should be knocked down and the lots sold for development.
