Brentwood's Well-Kept Secret

Just a half-mile from some of Brentwood's gritty money-wiring shops, Latino bodegas and storefront churches, the Academy of St.

I attended ASJ from 1983-1991. I loved that school!
I'm so sorry to read about the problems.

This is really sad -- I hope they let alum know exactly what is going on soon. I hate just reading this as a newspaper article.

A lovely story about committed educators who are striving and struggling to even the playing field in a former finishing school that now serves an overwhelming minority population. Solid reporting and a great piece of good news in the midst of an often depressed and sometimes depressing Brentwood community where the efforts of folks like Sister Eileen and Sister Kerry and their faculty and staff really stand out.

This is so sad. I loved my 4 years at the Academy and have some very close friends from my time there. The teachers were wonderful and I credit my success in college and now my own teaching career to them. I hope something can be done to save this wonderful institution.

We just had our reunion this past April and there was no indication from attending staff that there was a tough financial problem. I will donate what I can and I hope other alumnae do the same. A school like ASJ is a gem in a devastated society. It was a retreat for young women to escape the on going peer pressure of MTV and a materialistic world around them. This is the place where I found not only my own self confidence but also where I discovered who I was and where I wanted to go in life. These educators teach young women to embrace their talents as well as their education.
I beg any alumnae to donate what they can so that the next generation of young women may grow and prosper like we have!

Words could never really describe the quality of education, nor the firm, but loving way in which we were taught. Even as we sat through Humanities courses, we had modeled for us, the essence of what it is to be humane and encouraged to find in ourselves our god given gifts to enhance humanity.
I hope that everyone who reads this will contribute as much as they can to preserve spirit and legacy of the academy of Saint Joseph.

My experience at the Academy has shaped my life. It has given me a strong faith that has carried me through many difficult times. I have ALWAYS been proud to have graduated from there. It was a wonderful experience and it saddens me to think the school may not continue for others to benefit from. The decrease in vocations is a terrible loss to everyone.

All six of our children went there. Thank the good Lord that only one of them got himself violated by Father Flannaghan. Well, I guess in a good Christian life one has to account for the needs of the brothers when considering the overall future of the family. Little Johnny can now seek comfort in the Lord.

The so-called "Christian conservative" is full of baloney. No Father Flannaghan (or any variant spelling) ever served at the A.S.J., and on the high school level, it's an all girls school (not co-ed). This is an inappropriate post that has already been flagged, because it based on a false premise by a Catholic-baiter. I wonder why Newsday hasn't removed it...

Wow this forum attracted a lot of losers. Shows some people really don't have a lot going on in their lives other than to humiliate their selves in topix forums. I believe theBrad Paisley song "I'm Cooler Online" fits well for Rangers and Christian Conservative. More reason why children should not be on the internet unsupervised.

Now back on topic, there is a facebook page dedicated to helping ASJ, all those who are on here for good intentions, I hope you do check it out. The group is called SaveASJ.

Unfortunately they only remove posts when they have inappropriate words in them. Its quite sad people like this exist only to ruin the good name of great places. Only reason I can think of why they sit in front of the computer and do this all day long is the absence of morality and intelligence. Its really sad and I hope they get help.

Actually, it would be more accurate to state that the post only attracted two "losers," one of whom is a total b.s. artist and the other a total buffoon. Our alumnae from the A.S.J. Class of '98 identified them both. Thanks to her for calling attention to the SaveASJ facebook page.

Yes it would have been more appropriate to specifically write the two, but hopefully every one knew what I meant.:)

It makes me wonder what has happened to all that money the parishioners, parents and alumni donated every week at Mass and through the various methods used to support their Alma Mater; tuition, etc.. I know that the Catholic Church could and should make a plea to Rome and settle this matter. The money is nominal (compared to the wealth of the Catholic Church) and based on the impact this institution has had for many generations of young women, this should be resolved without hast. It would seem like this would be a responsibility that the Church should insure, through Rome, that this facility stays open and solvent. We are speaking about a tradition that is approaching 160 years with an impeccable track record for excellence in education.

Members of my family attended this school for 2 generations from 1950 through 1975 and I know that they donated thousands to support the Academy. This combined with all the thousands of alumni that did the same should prove that in this time of need the Vatican should step in; spread the wealth and use some of the billions donated to keep these types of institutions operating for future generations. If the Catholic Church allows this institution to fail and turns it head, then we as Catholics need to take some action and see that our money makes it way back to do exactly what the money was given for in the first place. As far as the mismanagement or malfeasance of the Academy, that can be corrected through better business management and a closer scrutiny of their recruiting practices moving forward. This is a true test of the sincerity of our faith. Closing this facility is a slap in the face to people who have worked so hard to keep it open. I personally believe that turning a deaf ear is another reason for the members of the Church to start to wonder what Rome does with the billions in the Vatican Bank we put there.

I went to the convent yesterday. Sister Mary Lu invited me in. It was snowing, so i wanted to take my daughter and show her the beautiful affect the snow had on the architecture, and the landscape. It was so beautiful. A true Oasis.

Sorry folks but the future of any school is tied to location, location, location. I've seen a number of good schools in Brooklyn go belly-up when the neighborhood changed. What changed? They no longer had poor families that scrimped to send children to a good school. Nothing else.

Also, please be advised the "Christian Conservative" has been appointed as Tolerance Enforcement Officer in the Obama administration.
