"To circumnavigate the Green Mountain Range, to play golf on course after course in Vermont...is to enjoy a varied and interesting experience that no lover of Golf and Nature can afford to miss," lauded the Vermont State Chamber of Commerce in 1926. The United Opinion that spring went on to quote, "Vermont, like Scotland, is a country built for golf. Vermont is the Golfer's country."
There was golfing in Montreal in the 1850s and it was introduced into Vermont and New Hampshire later that century. In a 1987 book on golfing in Vermont, authors Bob Labbance and David Cornwell chronicle that history. In 1886, the Dorset Field Club, a nine-hole course was established. By the time the Vermont Golf Association was organized in 1902, there were at least six clubs including the Old Pine Golf Club in St. Johnsbury.

Farm camp to expand in Wells River
WELLS RIVER-An innovative education program based at a Wells River dairy farm will expand this summer after a Wisconsin-based organic farming cooperative awarded a grant of $4,000. The White River Natural Resources Conservation District recently received grant support to expand its Boltonville Land-Use Explorers Conservation Education Program in the Wells River Watershed.
Both the regional arm in Randolph and headquarters of Organic Valley in La Farge, WI have awarded resources to White River NRCD in support of the Boltonville place-based education program, or BLUE, which is located on and around Al-lens Farm, an organic dairy farm along the Wells River operated by Alice and Larry Allen.

SOUTH RYEGATE-Built during the heyday of the transatlantic ocean liner era, she was the fastest and most powerful passenger vessel ever constructed in America. On her maiden voyage in 1952, the SS United States broke Atlantic crossing speed records that she still holds today. Now, an ongoing effort to preserve the great ship from an unknown future will receive renewed attention from a documentary featuring previously unseen film footage of the ship collected by a Northeast Kingdom man.
Don Leavitt owns www.nautiques.net and is one of the world's largest online retailers of nautical antiques. He operates the firm from his home in South Ryegate and contributed some of the background film to "S.S. United States: Lady in Waiting."
