We visited the Fire Island Coast Guard Base with the Cub Scouts last Fall. I never knew how much these Guys really do.They also get into some pretty dangerous situations that we never hear about because it happens out on the water where there are no people with cameras or News Reporters. Keep up the good work!

Nice story about Race Rock. I was a member of the USCG crew there in 1958/9 when it was still a manned station. The light it the tower in the photos is not the original. The original was a polished brass and crystal work of art that rotated, powered by a weight descending within the tower and unwinding a cable from a drum. There is a nearly identical one in the museum at the old Greenport LIRR station. It is the same size and is powered by a weight, but is seedy looking becaused it is heavilly tarnished. The brass on all lighthouses was always highly polished. Noce story. Best Kevin Brennan, Long Beach

Wonderful article and video. I would love to see more news videos about the lighthouses in this area. We visited last summer and will definitely return to visit more Lighthouses.

Just so nice to hear that someone takes care of these wonderful old beacons! There should be more people like Mr.Gresham.More lighthouses need to be maintained and preserved.
