The 2009 CrabFest will be held Saturday, Sept. 5 in Blanchester and will feature a lot of thrills, chills, food, fun, games, top name entertainment and the world’s first ever dual firewall motorcycle jump. The event will be held at the world’s largest horseshoe crab on SR 28 in Blan. The festival returns Labor Day weekend with the world record first-ever double firewall motorcycle jump over Calvary’s Hill, said Jim Rankin, pastor of the Freedom Worship Baptist Church, sponsor of Crabfest. Stunt legend Gene Sullivan and Lou “The Rocket” Re will be making the double firewall motorcycle jump. Other stunt legends attending include Bob Gill — The Florida Flyer — who will light the torch at the firewall jump, and cycle jumper John “Mercury” Morgan. Entertainment at CrabFest ’09 includes performers on two music stages. Josh Bates, one of contemporary Christian’s young stars, performing his top 10 hits; Donnie Sumner, Elvis Presley’s backup singer, a Hall of Famer and a regular on the Gaither Homecoming TV specials, will feature many of his hit songs; Blaine Bowman & his Goodtime Band will bring their parodies to the festival; Devona & The Demos featuring hits from the '60s and '70s. Mr. Chris & the Cruisers will also perform tunes of the '50s and '60s and 2nd Chance will perform a variety of original tunes as will Crawford & Dunlap. Just before the big jump, the Watchmen from Billings, Mont., will present tunes from their recent album. The event will feature booths, crafts and foods, including a variety of crab favorites, a larger KidZone, inflatables and a demonstration ring featuring martial arts, gymnastics performances and more. Special displays will be available inside the World’s Largest Horseshoe Crab, including exhibits of Evel Knievel and Elvis Presley and a special dinosaur display. CrabFest ’09 is centered around the world’s largest horseshoe crab, one of the top five roadside attractions worth seeing as rated from CNN and Roadside America.com. Updates and additional events will be posted at www.crabfestohio.com. Admission is free and everyone is encouraged to take a lawn chair. A celebrity dinner will be held Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Freedom Worship Baptist Church. Celebrities expected to attend include Sullivan, Gill, Morgan and Steve Sisco, chaplain of the Cincinnati Reds. Following dinner, a tour of the jump site will be held.
