Residents ask township to reconsider shelter cuts
About a dozen Bethlehem Township residents, including one with a petition signed by more than 60 others, asked commissioners Monday night to reconsider cutting funding to homeless shelters this year.
The effort is part of an ongoing campaign by the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley and other homeless advocates to pressure the township. After years of being a top contributor to the Valley's nine shelters, commissioners cut funding completely this year.
''Please reconsider,'' said township resident Mish Ganssle. ''Our community has a responsibility to the citizens of this county. The township is not an island and we are not a gated community.'' Read more

Our township must not ignore the situations of those less fortunate members of our larger community who do not have stable housing. Shelter is one of the basic needs of life and is especially important for growth and development of children.
In our township we have recently seen the razing of the mobile home development on Freemansburg Ave. That was an area of low income housing that is no longer available. What responsibility do we have to those people? Do we simply ignore the needs of low-income people? Our township is made of caring individuals. We surely will not ignore the needs of the homeless in our greater community. We need to continue to include funding for homeless shelters in our township budget. |

I am happy to see that Bethlehem Township hasn't been completely over-run with selfish jerks. |

The commissioners will review that NEXT year at budget time. That suggests that they do not need that casino money right now and will check out their needs NEXT year...maybe.
Cynthia represents a good sozed group of BT residents who feel the way I do. It is OUR responsibility to help those in need. ALL of us, not jetc the cities of the LV. This is true of the project for the work release prisoners in that township IP. SHARING the burden of the county will show the rest of the county that BT deserves a share of the casino funds. But not the "lion's share" they claim they beed to survive. Their elected officols have showed the rest of us where their hearts are: in their wallets in their back pockets. Kudos to Mr. Ateyeh who says he will match anything up to a 20K donation if the township lines up for some responsibility in this county for a change. That's putting your money where your mouth is. We ain't holding our breath for this "cash stapped" township. Government greed comes to mind; RonMania is correct. |
