Sun, hurt by revenue declines, to eliminate 100 jobs
The Baltimore Sun Media Group, which publishes The Sun and community newspapers, will eliminate 100 jobs by early August to cut costs and stay competitive, Publisher Timothy E. Ryan told employees yesterday in an e-mail.
The company said it plans to reduce the 1,400-person work force through voluntary buyouts, layoffs, attrition and by closing open positions. A majority of the cuts are expected to come from the newsroom.
'In the face of today's tough economy, adapting to consumer trends while maintaining our fiscal strength is proving to be even more difficult, yet even more critical,' Ryan said. 'By adjusting our business model and redesigning our core publication, we expect to stimulate readership growth and improve our financial performance.'

Prison Bus Slaying Verdict To Be Announced Monday
A state prison inmate charged with murdering another inmate aboard a prison bus will hear the verdict next Monday in Bel Air.
An aide to Harford County Circuit Judge Emory Plitt says court will reconvene at 10 a.m., when Plitt will read his written decision.
Plitt began deliberating May 20 on the question of whether Kevin Johns is guilty of first-degree murder in the 2005 strangulation of Philip Parker Jr. and, if so, whether he was criminally responsible for his actions.
Johns claims he is severely mentally ill and that Parker died because state prison workers, health care professionals and court officers failed to keep him properly medicated and restrained.
