Train-truck sites stir debate in Will

“It behooves any community that is considering taking on a project like this to work closely with developers to mediate these impacts as much as possible.”

When officials in the tiny town of Elwood built Will County's first intermodal train distribution center in 2000, many considered it a peek into the future for a fast-growing county seeking its niche in the ... via Chicago Tribune

As one who lives in the Elwood area, I would only caution others to, "Watch out for what you wish for." Once you have let the Genie out of the lamp, you can't put him back in.
I disagree with Ms. Ingalls. The local village officials of Elwood immediately went out and built a huge village hall for themselves. It was originally supposed to cost $2 million but "when the kids came out of the candy store" they had run up the cost of the new building for themselves to over $8 million. Just a small "conflict of interest" going on here.
My advice to Crete, Morris, and the others: You will be opening Pandora's Box. The deterioration of your roads and your quality of "small town" life you will find will be "just the tip of the iceberg." Good luck to you! You have now been warned.

I no longer think of heading out on the roads near the current intermodal facility -- all of our excursions have turned into miles of heavy traffic - our minivan in the middle of lanes and lanes of semis.
Now we head in a different direction for other shopping malls, grocery stores, restaurants and other places.

Now that the I-355 tollway has opened many communities surrounding it or with new access to it are planning for developments that will take advantage of this new road into Will County. The potential fiscal gains are tremendous unfortunately so are the negative impacts to air quality in the region. Now is the time for all of these communities to take a serious look at gas and diesel fuel emissions on air quality and the resulting health risks to Will County residents.
Intermodals like the one planned for Crete and industrial developments like those planned by Lockport will significantly increase the amount of truck traffic within Will County. While developers and planners might seek out information that minimize the impact of gas and diesel emissions it is the duty of the elected officials to seek out accurate information so as to be vigilant in protecting the public's health not in mediating it.
The new EPA standards and improved technology for diesel fuel emissions can be easily misconstrued to imply that the public should not be concerned about the health risks of fuel emissions anymore. The EPA standards that improve emissions on diesel trucks apply only to new trucks, furthermore the standards do not eliminate the hazard they only reduce it. The majority of trucks on the road now are old and do not have to comply with the new EPA standard. According to the American Lung Association the health risks associated with fuel emissions include cancer, asthma, respiratory diseases, pneumonia heart disease and premature death. All fuel emissions including diesel fuel emissions continue to be a serious health hazard. I encourage all residents of Will County to advocate for their right to breathe clean air.

As a member of a group that is opposing an intermodal being built in Indiana, I would be very interested in hearing all sides of living next to an intermodal/in an intermodal county. Any/all comments would be appreciated. I would like to know of any changes (good or bad) that may have happened to these small towns. Traffic congestion, air quality issues, anthing that might be a benefit to a small community, or a hindrance to a small community. If you would like to email me, feel free at kbrew12@sbcglobal.net. Thank you for your time! Kathy
