Boy trapped headfirst in hole at N.J. beach

A 10-year-old Little Egg Harbor boy narrowly escaped death late Wednesday after sand collapsed around him - trapping him headfirst in a hole he was digging in on the beach, police said.

N.J. DOT delays Long Beach Island bridge work during busy shore season

Beach Haven Times Police Log 6/24/09

- Chris Bielen, 18, of Barnegat was arrested at 4:11 a.m. June 20. on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Police stopped Bielen's car after it observed traveling the wrong way on a one-way street. Field sobriety and breath tests revealed that he was intoxicated. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and traveling the wrong way on a one-way street. Patrolman Andy Wahlberg was the arresting officer. - Michael Carey, 21, of Stafford was arrested at 3:01 a.m. June 21 on a charge of violating local ordinances regarding noise and violent and tumultuous behavior. Police observed Carey hitting the windshield of a Trolley Tours bus. When Carey was questioned, he allegedly caused a scene. Patrolman Andy Wahlberg was the arresting officer. - The Borough Police Department is investigating various incidents of criminal mischief in the area of Bay and Taylor avenues on June 21. Patrolman Dan Ivancich found smashed windows in two cars; a window at Up From the Deep was broken with a rock; a truck was painted with graffiti at Island Sun Jewelry; and Farias Surf Shop had an electrical box also painted with graffiti. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. James Markoski at (609) 492-0505 - Patrolmen Andy Wahlberg, Kevin Snow, and James Golding responded to an a report of a woman drowning in the area of 2nd Street and the bayfront June 20. Snow found the woman in Morrison's Marina behind a boat with her foot caught in a rope. Wahlberg and Golding then laid down on the dock and grabbed hold of the victim, whose name was not released, to keep her head above water while Snow went into the water and untangled her foot. The three officers removed the woman from the water and administered first aid until the Beach Haven First Aid Squad arrived. - Brodie J. Gray, Voorhees, was arrested June 21 on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Gray was observed by Special Officer Dan Petrone operating a motor vehicle northbound on Ocean boulevard at an apparent high rate of speed. While following Gray, Petrone also observed Gray's vehicle operating in an erratic manner and initiated a motor vehicle stop at East 77th Street and Ocean Boulevard in Brant Beach. A further investigation revealed Gray was driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Gray was arrested by Petrone and transported to police headquarters, where he produced a sample of his breath. Gray was subsequently charged with failure to maintain a lane, careless driving and driving while suspended. He was processed and released pending a future court hearing.[PARA] - Jamie D. Bova, 19, of Yorktowne, N.Y. was arrested June 19 on a charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Special Officer Dan Petrone was checking the 80th Street Beach entrance when he detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana. A further investigation led to a vehicle parked at the oceanfront residence, where four occupants were in a vehicle. Petrone approached the vehicle and observed a bong in the vehicle. Bova was arrested for possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and released pending a future court date. Patrolman Dave Seegers assisted.

For nearly 45 years recreational divers explored the sunken stern section of the Norweigian tanker Stolt Dagali, lost in a collision in 1964, but only divers Steve and Maureen Langevin of Laurence Harbor knew about the anchor tucked under the starboard side of the wreck.
