Swansea gas station parcel gets attention
“What good is a lien if you can't collect any money?”
While Swansea leaders searched for the owner of an abandoned Clark gas station at 1341 N. Illinois St., a developer purchased it from right under their noses for $20,000 at a county real estate auction.
Now, the lot, which was left behind when a string of metro-east Clark gas stations closed seven years ago, may become another convenience store, except without gas this time.
Trustee John 'Skip' Kernan was walking into the village government center -- directly across the street from the old gas station -- earlier this month when he saw a man tearing plywood off the door of the small building on the land, where the village has spent money on upkeep while trying to track down the owner.
