Yea, great. But now we need a food market to replace Ranch Market, Henry's would be great. Whole Foods would be great. Trader Joe's would be good, or maybe Bristol Farms. If you really want to upscale things, these would be good considerations.

I'm willing to bet a Food4Less would be built before any of those.

That would suck. I thought we were trying to upgrade the neighborhood. If that's the case, we should have left King Ranch there.

The rumor is there are plans to build a Stater Brothers across the street (to the east) of Target. I can't say I am crazy about Stater Brothers. I will still probably go to Vons in Glendora.

I too would love to see Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, or Bristol Farms, or at least a mini-Vons in that space or nearby. But, I will take Stater Brothers any day over another garbage discount market like King Raunch. I am so glad it is gone.

Greedy unions and US workers chased them out of the country.

Vons is very nice...it's a little on the pricey side though. Stater Bros. isn't too bad though, I shop there and really have no complaints either.

I'd settle for Stater Bros., but hell no to Food 4 Less.

I used to tolerate Ralph's, until the strike. When was that, about ten years ago?

That was around 2003 if I remember right, those strikers were pretty bad. I remember them harassing little old ladys. They hasseled me when going in as well, you are right...I haven't shopped there since.

They are planning to build a grocery store across the street, and all the major chains have expressed interest - but none of them, including Stater Bros, has an upper hand yet.

I also think Staters would be a REALLY BAD idea. Obviously the other location would close, and exactly what store would be jumping at the chance to replace IT? Staters works in a smaller location. The larger Stater stores, like the West Covina one, don't maintain the wider product selection that they should... and the new grocery store across from Target is to be a larger store.

I think Vons is the best bet. Whoever said they had higher prices is just assuming "nicer store" = "bigger bill" -- and that's not true at all. I admit I used to think the same thing... until a few years ago when thing started changing at Albertson's (the company was sold), I started checking other stores. Vons is infinitely better at customer service, product selection, and good prices while having a NICE store.

And having a Vons on 9th & Azusa would be full circle... considering that the Ranch market, when it was built decades ago, was originally a Vons.

But whatever the case, DON'T put a Stater Bros. or anything else besides a Vons / Albertson's / Ralph's. We need a major grocery store with big selection and full service, not just one that "tries" to be, and not a store we already have in Azusa.

Vons does have higher prices than Stater Bros. and Food4Less. I've shopped all three. I don't mind paying more for groceries when the lines are shorter and the store is cleaner etc. But looking at your demographic there, chances are good it could be a F4L or Stater, we aren't exactly in a booming economy either.

I would be happy to paid slightly higher prices for better quality food and a better selection. These discount markets just don't offer that.

I definitely want something upscale. If it is to be Von's, then I want Pavillions.

You can ask almost anyone and get this same answer from our "demographic here" - We mostly shop at Vons, Albertsons, and Ralphs in Glendora. That's the biggest complaint in the community, and has been for over a decade (though someone who DOESN'T live here would obviously not know otherwise): that we don't have a full service grocery store.

A full service grocery store is exactly what's going in at the site. It will not be a Food4Less or a WinCo or a Superior or Gigante, as much as someone from "your demographic there" might think it should be. Sorry but, whether or not it's your intention, you're unfairly - and incorrectly - stereotyping the whole community. Even with the addition of Fresh & Easy, which has been great in spite of it not being a full-service store, the vast majority still shops its groceries at major retailers outside Azusa. We didn't have the sites to accomodate the boom of larger grocery stores in the 90's, and now we will.

And the "chances are" not in favor of what you're saying because, as I explained earlier, Vons / Ralphs / Albertsons / Staters are ALL interested in negotiating for the site. So whatever the economy is, they all want to be next to Target because they all see possibilities for themselves there. It will probably just come down to which one will present the strongest deal for the site.

All I was saying is that we should get one of the three national chains (my personal preference is Vons), as we don't need a Stater Brothers 2.0 - especially since that will just cause ANOTHER problem trying to get its current site re-occupied. Plus, people who shop Staters like it for what it is... they're not worried about bakery / deli and bigger product selection... Their needs are already being met. Azusa needs another full-service option, and I think, based on what I've learned, most likely they're going to get it.

From what I know, Safeway (the parent company) is not introducing any "new" Pavillions stores - just retaining the names of the locations that have already had it. Vons had positioned Pavillions as upscale from its other stores. But when Safeway took them over several years ago, their plan became to make all of the stores a better design and to carry better product. So presently, Vons and Pavillions only differ by the name on the front.

As a matter of fact, the selection is often better at the Glendora Vons than it is at the Monrovia Pavillions. The two stores' designs are nearly identical. So frankly, I don't care if they call it Safeway... as long as it gives us the same product selection / shopping experience package as it does all other updated Vons / Pavillions locations.
