It's a travesty how much damage is done to the San Gabriel River each year during the holiday. If not the trash and grafiti by these crowds, it's the polluted water from countless abandoned diapers and other trash left in the river for others to haul out. The ocean beaches don't look near as bad as the canyon does after big holiday weekend. People care at the ocean beaches.

I'm with you there, my friend. Is it a coincidence or has this gotten worse with onslaught of illegal immigrants in So. Cal? I've seen these people in our canyon campgrounds and their version of having a "good time." Their little "mijos" (kids) urinating and excrementing in the streams, beer bottles left lying around or thrown againt rocks, large rocks and canyon walls tagged and graffittied on, trash and diapers left lying on the ground, just feet away from a trash can....the list goes on. I remember as a child and teen in the 70's you would never see this because people from here tended to have a little more respect for nature and it's surroundings. The waterfall at Hogsback near Mt. Baldy Village is tatted with gang graffitti over gang graffitti. You can't even explore these places anymore without running into gang members or people getting high. I feel the forrest service need to make it's rounds a little more often and start busting these polluters and taggers.

Everyone going into these areas should have to register for a permit just as hikers have to for certain trails. If we are going to have any country left, the forest service needs to be enlarged and these areas need to be patrolled until the newcomers gain repect for propriety. There needs to be a graffiti task force to enforce rules just as in the cities.

SAW and thetruthurts are right. Most of our "illegal guests" don't have respect for this country because they didn't have respect for their own. Instead of spending millions of taxpayer's money on benefits that all these illegals get why not use that money to fund the forrest service to hire more workers to keep a better "watchful eye" on our mountain and canyon areas?

30,000 is around two thirds the population of nearby cities like Azusa or Glendora... So whoever said it was all people from Azusa going up there (in a different set of comments), I'm pretty sure they're WAY wrong about that.
