Recalled beef must be tossed, state says schools
“We're still just waiting for the USDA to assure us that the beef we have is safe to eat, and then we'll put it back in our system for consumption”
Texas school districts that have been storing recalled beef were told Thursday by the Texas agriculture commissioner to dispose of it.
The districts have shelved more than 765,000 pounds of recalled beef as part of the nation's largest beef recall, Commissioner Todd Staples said.
Tarrant County school districts -- including Azle, Castleberry, Everman, Keller, Mansfield, Grapevine-Colleyville and Birdville -- were affected by Sunday's recall.
The Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. in California recalled 143 million pounds of beef after a U.S. Department of Agriculture investigation revealed that some cattle were not properly inspected at the plant. The frozen beef was determined to be unfit for human consumption. Read more

7-year term for injuring paramedic
“We felt that while this young man nearly had a clean criminal record, his actions were so dangerous and nearly deadly that he deserved to go to prison”

GOP race in District 99 heats up
“I had to get everyone's attention.”
FORT WORTH -- The only thing thicker than the aroma of hickory sauce at Shady Oaks Barbecue last week was the tension between the two candidates.
State Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, and his opponent in the Republican primary were participating in a candidates forum at the monthly meeting of the North Tarrant Republican Club.
Geren used most of his opening statement to call optometrist Tom Annunziato a liar and accuse him of running a dirty campaign.
Annunziato then addressed the crowd, ignoring Geren's allegations. 'I'm Tom Annunziato, and this is my first time running for office, and this is all new to me,' he said. Read more
