Tarrant-area bands will be taking their show on road - to state finals
“They came off the field feeling they performed well, and they were rewarded by getting to go to the state contest.”
Five Tarrant County-area bands qualified for the state finals Saturday at competitions in Carrollton and Odessa.
Azle, Saginaw, Boswell and Fossil Ridge high schools took the four Area A qualifying spots in Odessa, with Springtown as the first alternate. Aledo finished second behind Sherman in Area B in Carrollton, with Birdville and Joshua as the alternates.
The 4A state finals will be Nov. 5-6 in San Antonio.

A helping hand allows elderly, isolated to stay in their homes
“One of the first things that folks need is to have someone visit with them and understand their problem. The biggest issue usually is transportation and food”
Neighbor Helping Neighbor, a relatively new program by the United Way, is trying to make a difference in the lives of the elderly.
The nonprofit is finding senior citizens living alone and perhaps needing help and enlisting others to check in on them to see if they might need a ride to the drugstore or doctor and to make sure there's food in the house.
Don Smith, director of the Area Agency on Aging for Tarrant County, said the program started in September 2006 and is one of a kind.
'We don't know of any other place that does this, at least in Texas,' he said. Read more

Authorities have identified two suspects in a botched bank robbery during which a Springtown couple was held hostage for hours in their home.
Cary Deon McGowan, 48, of Fort Worth, is wanted in the Jan. 16 kidnapping and attempted bank robbery, Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said Wednesday.
Gary Huddleston, 56, of Muskogee, Okla., was arrested early Wednesday during a raid in Muskogee. Simultaneously, SWAT officers raided a residence in the 6000 block of Nine Mile Azle Road in northwest Tarrant County and may have just missed McGowan, Fowler said in a news release. Read more
