Winds carry smoke to Wichita from controlled burn
Strong easterly winds are blanketing the Wichita metropolitan area with smoke from a controlled burn in the Flint Hills east of Butler County.
'The whole city of El Dorado is covered with a haze of smoke, and it's all the way to Augusta,' said Dan Armstrong, fire chief for Butler County Fire District No. 3. 'You can't believe the smoke.'
Pastures in the Flint Hills routinely encompass thousands of acres, he said, so the fire could be quite large.
Northeasterly winds gusting to 25 mph have carried the smoke all the way to Wichita, but a Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher reported no traffic problems caused by the haze. Read more
Governor will miss annual turkey hunt
“I feel like it puts us in a bit of a crunch, but some of the guides are doubling up a little, so we'll be in good shape.”
The governor's turkey hunt won't have the governor for the first time in its 22-year history.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will miss the Thursday-Saturday event in El Dorado to attend the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.
A spokesman for the governor said she received the tickets as a gift for service to the Democratic Governors Association.
Sebelius had hunted every spring since becoming governor in 2003.
