Mass. gas tax holiday called a gimmick

“It's a wonderful gimmick, but it's a patch. It doesn't solve our long-term interests and the trade off in the short term is an unwise one”

Gov. Deval L. Patrick said he is sensitive to the impact of rising gas prices on families and commuters, but shot down the idea that a gas tax holiday should be considered as a short-term solution. via Berkshire Eagle

It's nice that Patrick is sensitive to the gas price crisis. Sensitive gets us a whole lot of nothing. why not provide some ideas on how to stop the long term problem rather than just shoot down short term solutions.
I would also say the increase in revenue is probably because they don't touch roads east of worcester. Ever heard of the other half of the state. Roads, buildings and cities are crumbling over here but were hardly even considered massachusetts.

I politetly requested in another forum to do what we did years ago, shut down the gas stations on Sunday, the stores don't make money, on gasoline,so they claim, anyway. Thats just a start, I am runing for President in 2016, by the way. And you are always entitled to my opinion.

It may not solve all our problems, but it is a start. So would drilling in Alaska and the Gulf, building a few refineries, going nuclear (like the French) while we look for alternative fuels. We need to do a lot of things, most of which the liberals are oppossed to. We just have to protect the bunny rabbits first. Meanwhile, let's just tax gasoline to death, and blame the oil industry for everything.
Don't you think it is a bit odd that the environmentalists say nothing about the Chinese and Cubans drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, as they forbid America from doing the same thing?

You really don't understand the issues. The Tax holiday will do nothing as there are no guarantees, nor should it be expected, that gas stations will lower their prices by the amount of the tax. Then people will drive more, using more gas and hence increasing the price. Then the tax will be put back in place and the price will be well north of $4 a gallon.

Drilling in Alaska and the gulf will also do nothing to change the prices as that oil will not go to the US. This is an open market. Speculators bid on the price. It is a money GAME! You bet on what you think the price will be and hope you're right to reap huge profits. The thought that we will drill on our land and KEEP OUR oil is naive. It will be sold to the HIGHEST bidder anywhere in the world.

Wall Street and the Chicago boys, specifically, and girls, need to be put in jail for deregulating, the oil for profits, it is not unlike the insider trading of the Milkin years. This is a very simple practice, that was even used in the movies, Wall Street, when the demand is high, scale down the supply, the problem with this theory is, that it is all smoke and mirrors, the government has turned a blind eye to the oil companies and OPEC, in general. Where is the supply? Answer, its in the next oil per barrel futures, which currently is not being regulated, why? simple, Bush's buddies are making a fortune, on both ends. The war in Iraq was supposed to be a diversion, so that the Bush administation, would have a reason for the fluctuating oil prices, and gasoline, due to the war, but this did not happen, what has happened is a windfall for the oil companies, lets face it, there not going to stop unless someone tells them to, and that is not going to happen, with a Democrat or Republican President, the ball is already rolling downhill.By the way, you are entitled to my opinion. Bring our troops home now, and let them play in an American sand box.

If the gas tax is rolled back that will mean less money for the very efficient turnpike authority. They may have to cut back on patronage jobs. THis is why the govenor is concerned about the roll back. Save the rollbacks for Walmart :-)

You don't know what you're talking about - more bumper sticker platitudes and and conspiracy mongering - libs like you hate the idea of anyone making money (but themselves). It's a money game? No kidding! People make money on oil - if they didn't you wouldn't have any gas for your car. We have a SUPPLY problem, and if we don't start producing more energy here we're screwed. Oil companies make profit, get over it, they also risk billions of dollars to find and bring the oil to you so you can drive to Starbucks, Jacobs Pillow and the Gap. Drill in ANWAR, drill in the Gulf drill anywhere in the US. Build more refineries! Build nuclear plant for cheap electricity. The Luddite libs are killing us with their prohibitions and phony environmental objections. As for Patrick, he's just a garden variety nitwit, who sees any tax cut as an affront to his left-wing sensibilities. A tax-cut on gas is a gimmick, but I doubt he has any serious long-term ideas beyond the pie in the sky stuff that won't be a reality for 50 years. It's easy for him, he's a limousine liberal, and we pay pay his gasoline bill.

This is the first reasoned post I have read on these forums. Estimated 10 years to bring ANWAR online if drilling began today. The amount of oil in ANWAR would last about 6 months at current consumption rates.

Sure nuclear is cheap, as long as the subsidies keep flowing their way, as long as you don't factor in the cost of waste removal, as long as you don't factor in the cost of security, as long as you don't factor in the cost of decommissioning. Hell ya nuclear is cheap.

If it was a supply problem, then the oil companies would not be making record profits. Oil men are getting richer and richer by jacking up the price. Iraq can fund their own revitalization with all the oil that is stockpiled there right now. The oil (supply) is there....just not realeased as to keep price high.

The Liberal Adgenda from decades ago to stop oil drilling in the U.S.A. has caused our dependence on Arab Oil and the soon to be $5.00/gal price.

Next time you fill your tank up, thank a Lib for the high prices.

We stopped drilling in this country because it wasn't cost effective, had nothing to do with any agenda other than making a profit.

Maybe we should just take the oil from Iraq to make them pay for our continued help in their war instead of getting nothing for our services.

Total maximum ANWAR reserves (according to USGS)= 16 Billion Barrels - http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-0028-01/fs-0028-01...

Current US consumption rate 20 Million Barrels per day

16,000,000,000/20,000,000 = 800 days = 2.1 years

As you can see, ANWAR is not gonna be much help ...
