I can remember growing up in Danville, VA, we had 7 theatres from one end of Main Street to the other. People can't believe that, as it all began in the 40's. You had your choice of genre' and my cousin and I went almost every Saturday. The movie cost $.25 and for another $.50 we had popcorn and a soda. Unreal. For a "podunk" town as I have heard it called that was a lot of entertainment. We also had three drive-in theatres. All have been closed or turned into other businesses except for one and it is used mostly for live theatre or old movies.

Wow, what a nice retrospective on Orlando's movie theaters! I noticed though, you failed to mention the curious Cameo Theater on Colonial Dr. which was just down the street from the Vogue. The Cameo still stands, and occasionally a spurt of activity happens in the building, then it goes dark again.
I really wish someone would restore the old Beecham Theater on Orange Ave.(now the Tabu club). It was one of the only theaters in Florida capable of Cinerama, and had an exclusive engagement of "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" in 70mm and 6-track Stereo Sound! What a shame... |
