Although I'm not a Mathis fan, this seems a little bias of the newspaper to put this article up like this. Why doens't the headline say "Mathis challenges incumbant in primary"?

There is no competition in this race. Mathis even went out of his way to change his legal residence so he could run. But he bring nothing to the table. Sounds like another Forrest power grab stunt to me. But his time will be up soon enough.

Frisky- I don't understand your accusation. Mathis had an announcement story awhile ago. Each candidate gets one. You aren't just patrolling for things to complain about, are you?

Well, looks like we have a GREAT choice for District 3 - a drunk bar-owner and a foreigner that doesn't know the first thing about the farming community, and doesn't care enough to help them. Looks like we're doomed... Would someone please talk Laurie Kincaid into running again?

If only more fellow citizens would run for a public office we would have a big field to pick from, but most people, myself included do not want all the attacks that occur (see post above)
Misspelling or poor choice of words get you fried in the paper or internet post.

I think it's good to have new blood in local politics. One thing I can say for Guy: if he doesn't know something, he's willing to learn. If you don't think he knows about the farming community, get some local farmers together and have a sit-down with him. No one can learn what no one is willing to teach.

I don't vote in local elections because it's the same clique that runs time after time. But I'd vote for Guy if I could because he's not one of them and he's demonstrated ambition and innovation that will help keep this community alive.

phenonmenalwoman: You bring up an interesting point. We had a concern with an oil rig that was coming into our community. The location of the rig was a serious safety issue to residents of a dead-end street. Those residents tried to have a "sit-down" with Guy, and discuss how they should approach this issue, but everytime they tried to contact him, he was too busy or he was not available. They left messages that were never returned. So, what else are they supposed to do? Also, the area I mentioned above, Guy has not once visited, except to campaign the first time he was elected.

I'm not trying to be ugly, and I know many do not agree with my opinion, but I am concerned about my community, as I am sure all of you are. That's why we voted for the other guy in the previous election...

I didn't know that Mathis already had an announcement piece in the newspaper. I was concerned about equal treatment. Again, not that I'm a Mathis fan....

I have had dealing with Guy on a number of occasions. The only thing he is intrested in is whatever makes him look good. Phones calls DO NOT get returned and unless whatever the issues is... if it does not involve something that will benifit him and his family or business you can forget any response until it is to late to matter.

There are some very good points being made here.
True, Tom Mathis changed his residency way back last fall. He spends most of his free time at his residence in Queen. Tom is a life-long local with a true interest in the concerns of the citizens of Eddy County. He would be a good commissioner. Colorful and interesting comes to mind when I think about Tom being a commissioner.
I like Guy Lutman but I have to agree with those who say he is unavailable and more interested in his gain. He is smart and if you can get his attention, he is genuinely interested in finding solutions for the citizens problems.
I support Tom Mathis this time.

Assuming that's how it is with everyone who deals with Guy, how does that differ from any other Carlsbad politician?

Put in a phone call to Guy and leave him a message that a mob of people are going to hunt him down and force him to eat dog crap.

See if that phone call gets returned...

If it does'nt, publish it in the paper.

That will show people the kind of politician their electing...

No offense Hal, but an adult wouldn't dignify that kind of message with a response.

Then maybe he will when people decide to remove him from office. Or they just get sick enough of him to make it "personal".

Guy Lutman is out of touch with Eddy County Employees. He Has been quoted as saying that EC employees should not get yearend bonuses because the private industry does not give bonuses. That is simply not true. If the county does not keep up with wages offered by private industry they will not be able to keep good employees. The jail is understaffed right now because smart, strong people with clean records and no drug habits can find better paying jobs. It takes a special person to willingly spend years surrounded by criminals day after day and night after night, in case you don't know the jail is running 24/7, 235 days a year, in spite of holidays, family activities, church schedules, etc! The pay should reflect the dedication required. Guy does not care about Eddy County employees , especially the ones who are out of the public eye.
Mathis is one smart man and he knows how to get things done.

The fundamental problem with is his background, as a Englishman he's is'nt in tune with the needs of the local people. He is for all intents a British businessman, his position is making money either from his city salary or his going business concerns.

There in lies the problem, Guy Lutman will cut salarys, bonus and positions to do what business does best...Protect the Bosses job at the expense of everyone else. An that INCLUDES Carlsbad...

The only way to deal with Guy Lutman is remove him or hold his feet to the fire, and even that may not work.

"Mathis is one smart man and he knows how to get things done."

For whom? He's a business owner too. I have yet to see a local not look out for the interests of himself and his cronies first.

Honestly. We hear "bring in new blood!" Then we get new blood and it's "He's an Englishman, what does he know?" Geez. What a bunch of malcontents.

Just saying here... I wonder if Guy Lutman has even seen all of his District? It is the largest District in Eddy County. It covers a lot of territory.

All I know first hand, is if there is no financial interest in it for Guy, then he does not know you, or return phone calls etc. And from my discussions wit other people and posts here on this board this is his MO. Tom Mathis has publicly stated that he will hire a full time person to be responsive to his constituents.
