It’s possible the old police department building is too small. Then again, maybe not.

Maybe we have too many police officers. We just overbuilt Village Hall, because we guessed wrong on staffing. We shouldn’t do that again.

With the revenue shortfall we will be facing over the next decade due to declining sales tax, falling property values and unfunded pensions, building new facilities should be very low on our priority list.

Once we are satisfied on staffing, maybe a consultant could find a way to utilize some of the excess space in the Village Hall. There is a lot of it and we have all the parking we need in the structure next door, especially at night.

Finally, we should not consider new capital programs until we find a way to fund the $50 million shortfall in fire and police pensions, which is for services already rendered. Our police and firefighters have earned these pensions and protecting that should be primary concern.

As it is, the pension obligation grows everyday and will be a burden for future homeowners and community businesses.
