"Currently 80 mentors are matched with children in Santa Cruz County, and Cubillas said there's a waiting list of children seeking a Big Brother or Big Sister. She said she hopes to train more mentors this year."

I applied to be a big but was rejected =(
And no, I don't have a record of any sort. How does one get rejected from BBBS?

I don't know but I do know they have a very stringent application process, which scares many people away. They always seem to have a lot more boys waiting than girls, so if you are a guy and think you might make the cut, please consider giving it a shot. Those waiting kids really need mentors!
