In Winter Park, this is partly because where there were two houses, there is one big McMansion.

The traffic on 50 West is murder.
Nothing in Mascotte, Groveland, and Clermont worth it....

The trend in WP has been to sub-divide old estates, where there HAD BEEN one house, into two or three lots, then put McMansions on those "new," smaller lots.

Who would want to live in Altamonte Springs anyway? There are an excessive number of motorcyle cops from Altamonte PD who do absolutely nothing except set up speed traps, hide behind trees with their toys, and cruise Altamonte Mall for expired tags.
Why live there and put up with such an excessive police force? Is crime really that bad or are speeding tickets a great way to generate revenue for the city? If you so much as look at them the wrong way, the'll give you a ticket. Report a burgulary at a residence? Expect a 2-hr wait.
I avoid the place like the plague.
Oh, and OJ is still looking for the killers.

Great Story, research, facts, what Orlando journalism needs more of. The rising gas prices should have a huge effect on expanding commuter rail in Orlando. Residents will begin demanding public transportation as a way to get to work.

As a lifelong resident of East Orlando, I will be moving out of the state next year for obvious reasons (crime, traffic, greedy politicians, illegals, etc.) you won't have to worry about 3 of us anymore!! I can't wait.

Be afraid be very afraid...

The real estate agent who says her clients don't mind a 40-minute commute had better check her gas prices. Her thinking is about 2 years out of date, or else her clientele is just the super rich

augustawind wrote: Who would want to live in Altamonte Springs anyway? I'm in Altamonte now. I ran into a speed trap in Winter Park, but I haven't here yet. Then again, I don't drive around like I used to. WP really made me mad with that. There was an exodus from my Altamonte complex when they tried to go condo, and now the place is oddly quiet w/high vacancy.. I like it. Great rent deal too. Started in Kissimmee and I grew sorry about that. Left after 3 years, went to Orlando for 1, and now I'm here, but contemplating leaving the Orlando area.

Oh, and OJ is still looking for the killers. when was the last time you reported a burglary in Altamonte Springs and had to wait 2 hours. Sure I don't like the speed traps either but when you live here you know where they are (the police are not very creative in finding new spots) But their excessive presence is what keeps crime low. I'd rather live here and have my biggest concern watching my speed limit than live in Orlando where crime is out of control. and our police force is into prevention which I truly appreciate. I have called the police because some kids stole our Xmas decorations late one night. They arrived in 5 min and caught the kids 2 blocks over . No complaints here.

I was in W. Kissimmee. If I didn't have trouble w/the justice system (my boyfriend actually), I might have held a positive opinion. There seems to be numbers of things closing along 192 now and it will probably get worse. I mean for starters, the Hooters closing was like knocking off a landmark..lol. It's how my brother remembers the area. Now there's a Fazoli's closing..I think a Bennigan's along there.. Some store in the Osceola mall. That strip may see a lot of downhill change and scare the newcomers off. St.Cloud always sounded nice like Kissimmee did, and it is closer to the beach, but I don't know what pulled them there. Good luck to you with your quiet hometown quest.

Like Kissimmee St Cloud will never be a small town again. The population growth is from the agressive annexation policy of the city forcing developers to annex if they hook up to water and sewer. The county seeing a way to not pay for police services works with St Cloud in the force annexation property plan.

Interested Observer wrote: Whatever happened to Poinciana? For a while, it was going strong; but it's never mentioned anymore??? Highly Hispanic. Not everybody's into that. Kissimmee is far enough from Orlando.. Poinciana is that much further. I was tempted by a house in Poinciana, but I'm glad it didn't go past there.
