Windsor residents voted 193 to 21 to start the long process of separating from the Somerville-based district, which also includes Alna, Chelsea, Palermo, Westport Island, Whitefield and Wiscasset.

Windsor would be the fourth of the district's eight towns to take such a vote, joining Wiscasset, Westport Island and Palermo.

A $26.5 million budget approved by the Regional School Unit 12 school board is nearly 3 percent higher than the current budget.
