Maple Hill Council Considers Street Repairs, Approves Rate Increase for Trash Removal
During Monday evening's Maple Hill City Council meeting Council Member Tara Convery discussed improvements for Sunset Street with City Maintenance Supervisor Tom Mayer. Convery's duty as a council member includes overseeing the city's street department.
Convery and Mayer discussed the fact that the city's street budget includes $40,000 to be used for street improvements. Mayer indicated he had received a preliminary bid for $34,000 to make improvements to Sunset Street. It was the consensus of Mayer and Convery, as well as the additional council members, that they do not wish to spend the bulk of the city's street budget on one street. Read more

New McFarland City Clerk In Stride with Council Members
Last Thursday evening, Larry Senne assumed the role as the newly appointed McFarland City Clerk. He fell right in stride with council members as he recorded the evening's activities and carefully questioned a couple of issues that may have seemed like old business to council members but were new issues to Senne. Senne was appointed to the position last month following Effa Winkler's retirement.
The council addressed a variety of issues that included requests from several citizens and council members. The first order of business included a request from J.D. Miller for consideration of a small increase in his mowing fees. Miller also voiced concern about a drainage ditch near his property that included moving buried telephone cable. Read more

Commission OKs purchase of vehicle tax estimator
“Who participates could create a bookkeeping nightmare or could solve our bookkeeping problems”
Wabaunsee County residents soon will be able to go online to estimate their vehicle taxes.
Treasurer Linda Coon spoke with Wabaunsee County Commissioners Monday about the program, which her office was familiar with through other treasurers' offices in Kansas.
"It's just something some of the county treasurers do so they (constituents) can have an idea what the vehicle is going to cost them before they come in," Coon said.
She said the initial set-up fee is $250, along with a $200 annual maintenance fee, and she said the funding for the program will come out of the motor vehicle fund. Read more

County Commissioners Attempt to Settle Township Dispute
Wilmington Township Board Member J.D. Hill appeared before the county commissioners Monday morning with a beef that he wanted the commissioners to settle.
Hill explained to the commissioners that there is a road that lies on the boundary line between Wilmington and Mill Creek Townships that services one homeowner. Hill continued by saying it was his understanding that for years Wilmington Township maintained the road and was reimbursed for their services by Mill Creek Township. He added that he was led to believe that the road was under the jurisdiction of Mill Creek Township, but that his township provided the labor and gravel because it was "seven or eight miles away from the nearest road that Mill Creek Township maintained."
