City of Berkeley Officials Call Off Plan to Clean Up Homeless Encampment

City of Berkeley officials today at least temporarily called off their threat to remove property at a homeless encampment under the Gilman Street overpass adjacent to Interstate Highway 80, saying some of the people who lived there have been able to find housing elsewhere.

At a hearing on June 27, an Alameda County Superior Court judge granted requests for a demurrer by three people arrested on the Albany Bulb, delaying the next stage in the case to Aug. 13. The District Attorney's office was expected to request a stay-away order for Amber Whitson, one of the defendants in the case, but did not.
