Finding some speed bumps on the roadways caused by dirt and debris from sugarcane trucks is only part of the issue with the cane season. If you have the good fortune of driving behind one of these trucks chances are your windshield will collect the debris flying off the tops of these trucks, a bit distracting at times. Cane trucks blocking roads waiting their turn to get into the fields is another fun time for everyday drivers. Maybe best of all is the smog created from setting those fields on fire causing visibility problems for drivers and breathing problems for those with allergies or sinus issues. Might not be so sweet after all.

I have respect for the cane farmers, but not at the expense of road safety by the general public.
Ive seen improvements in the amount of mud that is left on the roadways, but it's still a dangerous spot where you find slippery mud on a road surface.
Then, after we deal with that, we have the smoke from burning all the cane fields. That should have terrible long term effects on our lungs and bronchial system.
I like cane products, but Im more wary of that industry now than I used to be.

I guess the no littering signs posted along the highways don't apply to cane farmers. And speaking of highways, you need to be a bit more of a defensive driver during cane season. I suppose the cane truck drivers get paid by the load, so the heck with traffic laws; they need to get it while the getting is good.

I'm sure you've also noticed the caution signs posted on the roads warning everyone that cane is being harvested and loaded. We need some signs directed to cane farmers, "Caution, cane trucks need to yield to everyday traffic; you're not that special".

As for the black ash and contaminated air caused by burning the fields you have to wonder where the EPA is. I just hope there are no traffic casualities this year from the smog caused by burning cane fields and hope those with respiratory problems the very best getting through this season.

Every year there are fatalities from mud left on highways. About littering, the law states that they have 12 hours to clean up the mud on roads, so if you throw trash on the road you should also have 12 hours to come back and clean it up.
