Last election, we were living in Dollard, and had discussions with candidates about the fast traffic near our house, during soccer and baseball season, especially, because of nearby Coolbrooke park. We wondered about temporary speedbumps, etc. Large signs were painted on the street reminding drivers of the speed limit.
Now, we are in Sweden, and many neighborhoods have a very effective method of slowing down traffic - large wooden planters (about 1 m x 1 m), built on legs, are placed a few feet from each other, on opposite sides of the street, so that any vehicle passing must swerve one way around the first planter, and then the other way around the second planter. It drives some people crazy, but it works - everyone slows down!
The planters are removed in the fall, but are very useful in spring and summer, and decorate the street as well, with the flowers growing in them.
I have seen large stone planters in Dollard, at some intersections, but maybe it's a consideration for neighborhoods with speed problems...
