- Two former girlfriends of a man accused of killing two prostitutes in Alberta have testified that Thomas Svekla attacked them years ago and they feared for their lives.
The women, who cannot be identified, said the separate incidents took place in the late 1980s, when they were high school girlfriends of Svekla. The first to testify said she was partying with Svekla and some friends at her family's farm near Fort Saskatchewan when the others left to go to a bar.

Medical examiner says baby found west of Edmonton was boy, and nearly full term
- Edmonton's medical examiner says a dead newborn found in a rural area west of Edmonton was a boy.
RCMP say the baby was close to full term and there were obvious signs of trauma. A man walking his dog on a undeveloped lot in Stony Plain found the baby's body wrapped in a pink towel on Wednesday.
Police say the medical examiner has not yet determined a cause of death.
The baby's race has also not been determined.
Investigators say they are "confident" the body was left in the place where it was found sometime after 7 p.m. on Monday. Read more
