Trucking is an absurdly inefficient and dangerous way to move cargo. 90% of trucks could be replaced with cargo moved on an automated rail system. Except for the truck lobby, which has also prevented any pollution regulation of their poison-spewing death machines, nor does that $5-8k or whatever in taxes come close to paying for the damage they do to the roads. Essentially all damage to the highways is done by trucks. But our gas taxes pay for fixing them, subsidizing the truckers. The railroads have to pay to fix their own roadbeds.
Q: After the train reaches the closest train staion, how would the cargo then get to your home or business?

A: Duh, you by truck.

Q: Since their isn't a train link between LA and Bakersfield, how would cargo get to Northern CA?

A: Duh, by lots of trucks.

* Allow a lot of room around trucks. Try to leave a 10-car length gap when in front of a truck and 20-25 car lengths when behind a truck.

Seriously???? Ummm. unless it's 7am on a Sunday, there is no possible way to leave 25 freakin car lengths between you and the damn semi in front of you. Maybe the person writing this article has never driven in California, but at times it is impossible to leave 1 full car length open in front of you without getting cut off!!! Interesting about their blind spot on the right, I'll keep that in mind, even though every time a semi has almost come over on top of me in traffic, I was on their LEFT!!!

Check this out. I went through a CA Veterans program that pays for a Class A license. Luckily I already had experience driving trucks through the military. This truck "school" gave me a script to pass the DMV inspection test which is standard, however, they literally GAVE me the answers to all of the DMV tests (which are supposed to be controlled documents inside the DMV) with instructions to study the answers only. I was not given any safety instruction at all, and barely had any road time in a truck. Upon passing and receiving my class A license, I can say that I know a fraction of what a real class A driver SHOULD know. Stay away from big rigs???? DARN RIGHT! They are passing out class A licenses to inexperienced drivers in CA, as if a big rig is as easy to drive as a Honda. If I lose my job today, I could be in a truck tomorrow. Would you be willing to be on the road with me?? I wouldn't.

And I got my first Class A back in the '70's. A licensed driver let me drive his rig making deliveries throughout Berkeley, Oakland, Emveryville, knowing I had no license. Luckily I did not drive over anyone. After about one month of experience I when and got my medical certificate and than took driver's test (with same tractor and trailer) at El Cerrito DMV. The written was harder than the driving part but I somehow passed. Although I drove for about ten years, I never had a fender bender. Pure luck.

Wow Gary. Seems my paranoia about the big trucks may be justified. I try to get away from them on the freeway, and as much as they irk me, I try not to blame the drivers. My dad drove trucks also, and I have heard about the numerous gears and such, and realize it is no easy task to drive one of those. I couldn't do that job, and do appreciate those who do it.It's unfortunate that the people in charge of the drivers are getting away with such practices.

But don't forget my antics occurred back in the 70's. I doubt many obtain their licenses in this fashion now a days. But than again??? And no defense for my antics but my dad was a truck driver for years too and although he never let me behind the wheel I had the pleasure of sitting on a make-shift seat next to him (there was only a driver's seat in his tractor) for many miles in the late 50's and early 60's. One would be surprised how much I learned just observing him and his driving skills.
I really do believe there are many, many more safe and professional truck drivers on our highways than not.
