5 out-of-state gun dealers settle with NYC
Five out-of-state gun dealers sued by New York City have agreed to submit to independent monitors as part of a settlement.
The city sued dozens of gun dealers in 2006 to stem the tide of illegal out-of-state guns, many of which were used in crimes.
New York City said on Friday that the gun dealers in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and South Carolina also agreed to additional training for their employees to ensure legal firearm sales.
The agreements announced Friday will expire after three consecutive years if the gun dealers don't have a reported violation. Read more

More than two dozen cranes tower above the Charlotte skyline, slinging huge loads over streets and sidewalks.
The giants are a sign of the city's booming businesses, but fatal crane accidents in Miami and New York City this month have raised a question: Could a similar tragedy happen here?
The crane industry is largely self-regulated in North Carolina. Crane operators are not required to have special certifications, and crane owners are responsible for most training and inspections.
Charlotte and Mecklenburg officials don't oversee crane safety, either -- though an accident in 2006, in which a small crane fell into the street uptown, sparked some discussion about the topic, officials said. Read more
