Just Born put safety first in China outsourcing venture

Bethlehem candymaker Just Born's introduction this year of individually wrapped Halloween candies made in China might have seemed ill-timed, as it coincided with heightened consumer concerns about foreign goods prompted by a wave of recalls.

But the company is using practices recognized by independent product safety experts for maintaining quality, including continuing independent tests of the product and ingredients.

''I don't see any problem with outsourcing manufacturing of anything, provided the safety net is put in place to assure the product is made to our own safety standards,'' said Donald Mays, senior director of product safety planning for Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports. ''Outsourcing has been very successful for many companies. I have no reason to suspect that the quality of the product is jeopardized.'' Read more

Taking on tough jobs in some dangerous places

“Our military outsourcing has become an addiction that is quickly spiraling to a breakdown”
