Barclays to cut 1,800 U.K. IT staffers in offshoring move

London-based Barclays PLC today disclosed plans to offshore 1,800 of the 2,800 IT jobs at its U.K. operations to locations in Singapore, Hungary and India over the next three years.

The offshoring move is said to be part of an ongoing effort to transform itself into a more global organization. Bank officials explain that the bank wants to have "centrally managed technologies in centers of excellence" located in different parts of the world. The new approach "will allow us to follow the sun and be operational 24/7." ...

South Tyneside closes outsourcing mega-deal

South Tyneside Council has agreed a 10-year outsourcing deal with BT for the provision of back-office IT services, estimated to be worth around £300m.

The contract will cover the human resources, procurement and financial services functions of the authority, and could lead to provision of similar services to other councils across the UK in the future.

Some 450 South Tyneside Council employees will move to the new BT local government services division as a result.

EDS wins 15m outsourcing win with Cajamar

Spanish bank Cajamar is outsourcing its financial business processing to EDS in a seven year agreement, valued at €15 million.

EDS, which is planning to expand its business in Andalucía, will develop a new business process outsourcing centre in Almeria to support the contract.

Once completed, the centre will provide mortgage processing, customer interaction, administration and document management for Cajamar.

Microsoft Speaks Out Against Google-Yahoo! Deal

Speaking before a congressional subcommittee today, Microsoft Senior Vice President And General Counsel Brad Smith said that Yahoo!'s recent Internet search outsourcing deal with market leader Google would harm online competition and innovation. The executive also questioned the legality of the deal.

"If search is the gateway to the Internet, and most believe that it is, this deal will put Google in a position to own that gateway and the information that flows through it," he said. "Never before in the history of advertising has one company been in the position to control prices on up to 90 percent of advertising in a single medium. Not in television, not in radio, not in publishing. It should not happen on the Internet." ...

Atos Origin wins datacenter management services outsourcing contract

NXP, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, has awarded a five-year datacenter management services outsourcing contract to international IT services company Atos Origin. Under the contract Atos Origin will deliver global datacenter management services. This contract follows a business application hosting and datacenter services agreement signed last month. Together the contracts are worth 155 million EURO. At the same time Atos Origin is selected as NXPs managed service integrator, responsible for managing its local and global IT suppliers. This agreement will result in increased flexibility, reliability, and cost savings for NXP using datacenter consolidation, global sourcing, best practice implementation and innovation.

NAB outsources to India

The National Australia Bank NAB has reportedly decided to outsource nearly 400 new jobs to India by the year end. On Monday the Bank commenced its second round of its IT outsourcing program ITO Wave Two, and over the next 68 weeks the Bank would examine offshoring up to 148 jobs from its Technology Banking, Australia TBA and Technology MLC divisions.
