Court to Hear Exxon Valdez Case

“Rather it is about whether further punishment is warranted...We do not believe any punitive damages are warranted in this case.”

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to decide whether Exxon Mobil Corp. should pay $2.5 billion in punitive damages in connection with the huge Exxon Valdez oil spill that fouled more than 1,200 miles of Alaskan coastline in 1989.

The high court stepped into the long-running battle over the damages that Exxon Mobil owes in the spillage of 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound, the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

The Exxon Valdez supertanker had run aground on a reef. A federal appeals court already had cut in half the $5 billion in damages awarded by a jury in 1994. Read more

The Mullen Group blames royalty review for laying off 100 workers

“Natural gas drilling activity has been in decline for the past year due to lower natural gas prices which is quite typical for a cyclical industry”

- Oilfield transportation company The Mullen Group Income Fund (TSX: MTL.UN) is blaming uncertainty around potential royalty increases in Alberta for its decision to lay off 100 employees.

With Mullen's announcement Friday, the oilfield services sector added its voice to an intensive lobbying effort against an Alberta-government commissioned report that says the province has not received its fair share of oil and gas revenues and recommends boosting its take by 20 per cent.

Like many large oil and gas producers who have recently warned of significant spending cutbacks if the royalty report is implemented, Mullen also admitted Friday that ongoing low natural gas prices are contributing to the angst. Read more
