Safety agencies overwhelmed by surging inspection workload

The nation's largest retailer, Wal-Mart - a company that imports heavily from countries with lax safety standards - is asking the federal government to strengthen its oversight of consumer products.

One reason critics give for the rash of recent breakdowns in the government’s safety enforcement is that the Bush administration is philosophically averse to strict industry regulation and enforcement.

.........One example is the administration’s most recent pick to run the Labor Department’s Mine Safety and Health Administration: Richard Stickler, a former coal company executive. His nomination was opposed by many members of Congress, who criticized Stickler’s ties to the industry and the poor safety record at the mines he managed. Many of those mines had accident rates above the national average.
