Canada's largest book store chain reported late Tuesday its net profits rose to $49.2 million during the critical Christmas quarter ended Dec. 29. That compared with earnings of $41 million in the same quarter the previous year, and included a $7.6 million non-cash tax recovery.

Smurfit-Stone Container's earnings surge
Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., helped by improved industry pricing as well as a big one-time gain, reported a 76 percent increase in fourth-quarter earnings.
In the latest quarter, net income at the Chicago-based packaging concern was $44 million, or 16 cents a diluted share, up from the year-ago period's $22 million, or 9 cents a share.
Results were bolstered by a restructuring-related gain of $29 million, as well as a $2 million gain on the sale of certain assets.
Excluding special items in both quarters, Smurfit said, earnings were $23 million, or 9 cents a share in the latest quarter, up from the year-ago period's $14 million, or 6 cents a share. Read more

- Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD) has signed a two-year agreement with a Danish company to supply fuel cells for products developed for the materials handling market, the company said Tuesday.
Financial terms of the deal with H2 Logic A/S were not released. Under the deal, H2 Logic will integrate Ballards' fuel cells into hybrid systems for various materials handling vehicles including forklifts.
