Firm denies it OK'd sex offender to work at school

“If someone is interested in showing initiative, there's nothing we can do to prevent it. It's a free country.”

STAMFORD - A hiring agency denied yesterday that it gave a convicted sex offender permission to work as a custodian at Newfield Elementary School this month.

Spherion Corp. said it was completing a criminal background check on the applicant and did not give him the go-ahead to enter the school Nov. 14.

In a letter to parents Nov. 21, schools Superintendent Joshua Starr said he wanted to address parents' concerns 'about a (false) report that a registered sex offender was working as a temporary custodian at Newfield School.' Read more

The Friday after Thanksgiving traditionally is the big hit-the-malls shopping day, but the following Monday is fast gaining a reputation as Cyber Monday, one of the heaviest Internet shopping days of the year. Read more
