U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Michael Lynn on Wednesday approved Bombay Co.'s request for a quick auction of all or some of the business despite his concerns about the two-week time frame.
Last week, the Fort Worth-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, including a proposed auction of the business. The chain operates 388 stores and employs 3,600 people.
The company has secured a commitment for $115 million in debtor-in-possession financing from General Electric Capital Corp. and GE Canada Finance Holding Co. Bombay officials had said that the deal was needed in part to help finance payroll. Chief Financial Officer Elaine Crowley said in an interview Wednesday that enough credit card payments had come in for Bombay to pay employees this week. Read more

Home Depot CEO Says No Job Cuts Planned

The Home Depot Inc. doesn't plan to make any broad-based job cuts or reduce the number of its core retail stores in the face of a persistent housing slump that isn't expected to improve anytime soon, Chief Executive Frank Blake said Friday.
Blake told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that the Atlanta-based company's focus on customer service means more employees, not fewer, will be needed.
'We're making investments, notwithstanding the downturn,' Blake said. 'I think that's absolutely the right thing to do for the business. It's going to lead to long-term success.' Read more
