Legal defense fund will aid Detroit mayor Kilpatrick

A group of business and political leaders is forming a legal defense fund to help Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick fight felony perjury charges.

Members of the Detroit Justice Fund include Conrad Mallett, former chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court; S. Martin Taylor, a former DTE executive and a University of Michigan regent; attorney Reginald Turner, a member of the state Board of Education; and Detroit native and television personality Judge Greg Mathis.

The Detroit News says the fund could be announced today. Read more

I can't believe that a bunch of judges and attorneys are supporting this liar. I don't have a problem with anyone being represented during a trial but there is no way that I would help a person that continues to lie even after her or she is caught with their pants down.

GIVE UP KWAME. IT"S OVER

A legal fund needs to be set up for the prosecuing attorneys also as Im sure tons of people would donate. I know Ficano said they would give them more money but them getting a fund would show support and asure them the cash to go as far as they need to finally get him!!

How terrible for the residents of Detroit that these people would put the interest of KK before the interest of the city and it's citizens. KK has collect a paycheck and should be able to afford legal counsel. That he is being held accountable for questionable practices and deeds is only right and he will have his day in court, no one is denying him that. If he has decided to have a high priced lawyer then he should be the one to foot the bill.

Think how far this money could go to the citizens, schools and police and fire departments of Detroit and Wayne County.$8.4 Million to the whistle Blowers,$860K to Kwames defense team, the money (time of people that could be doing something else), Kwame’s relatives and buddies, he appointed that raped the city coughers. The millions more defending and prosecuting his sorry excuse of a human. This could easily hit $15,000,000.00 The city of Detroit deserves better. How many police officers would $5 million put on the streets making Detroit safer? How many teachers and books would $5 million put in the classroom?

Teachers, Parents and Students stand up and request Reginald Turner (Michigan Board of Education) and Martin Taylor (U of M regent) be removed from their positions due to conflict of interest. Kwame has killed the educational system in Detroit.

A regent: A member of the governing board of a state university or a state educational system

A group of business and political leaders, Please, I didn’t see a business person on the list? Worst we can do is boycott Judge Mathis. Teachers in Detroit should be upset that a lawyer that represent them is representing the guy who cause the teachers to lose their jobs, Detroit Education system can’t buy books for the classroom, and maintenance to the buildings. The teachers need to get together and give Reginald Turner two options, quit Kwame or resign off the board of Education.

He lied under oath about his affair. Having an affair is not against the law. So why didn't he just say yes to the question regarding the affair?

Hi Linda,

This brouhaha is not about his affair per se. He's an attorney and certainly must realize the penalty for lying under oath is perjury.

The crux of the matter is high ranking police officers were let go - they sued - the Mayor said he'd contest their win - quite abruptly the Mayor backed down and those men were awarded over 8 MILLION dollars.

The police officers that were let go were investigating the Mayor and his 'lady'...she worked for him. The woman, Christine, is a law student so she too would know the penalty for lying under oath.

It goes from there......really is convoluted.

This is not truly about an affair - I mean, who cares where he puts 'Mr. Wiggles'.

Because his lover helped him make up the reasons for firing the cop investigating the murder of the stripper who got beat up by Ms. Kilpatrick at the mayor's mansion. This may sound like a made for TV movie, but unfortunately it's true.

I agree, or better yet, writ him a note telling him to resign, and send it to the donation address. The onslaught of mail should keep them busy.

Funny,no asked the Buisness Leaders for their home addresses, many of them are not property owners in the city of Detroit, so their tax dollars will not be paying the $8.4 million.
